“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Health and Fitness Decision
I have been contemplating whether to purchase a gym membership to help me reach my health and fitness goals. Since the East Coast has been experiencing chilling, bitterly cold temperatures, my long walks have not been so enjoyable. During the warm weather seasons, walking became a part of my daily routine. It was nothing for me to hit the pavement when I arrived home from work. I acted just like a kid going outside to play with friends—I could barely wait to get out. However, the weather’s sudden change to bitterly cold has me thinking about joining a gym.
Visiting Neighborhood Gyms
I have visited a couple of gyms located relatively close to where I live. The visiting experience itself was just what I expected. As I walked through the facilities, I felt like every eye was on me and every bulge that I was trying to hide was suddenly visible; there were mirrors everywhere. The gyms that I visited offered similar membership plans; however, the most expensive plan for each gave the member more amenities. I left each gym with a handful of brochures and the best dates to join to get the full benefits of the plans. I may have left a couple of pounds behind too, as each visit was a workout.
Working It Out
Did you know gyms will let you use their equipment when you visit with the intention to buy? Yes, they will give you pre-membership vouchers or VIP pass so that you can visit their facilities. Your fitness representative who welcomes you to the gym will also help you to use the exercise equipment. Don’t expect this special attention after purchasing the membership, you will be on your own. However, most gyms have personal trainers—readily available, offering personal training sessions to gym members. The personal trainers’ costs vary depending on the fitness package you require to reach your personal goals.
Anytime a contractual agreement is involved, you want to take your time and weigh all options before deciding. I like the idea of being a member of a fitness facility that offers top-of-the-line exercise equipment, top instructors, and trending circuit exercise classes. Hiring a personal trainer could benefit my health goals if I decided against purchasing a gym membership—it’s good to have an exercise partner. Purchasing a gym membership is a decision that requires careful thought. Whatever I decide, the experience of visiting the neighborhood gyms was beneficial to my wellness and health.
Visit The Pearl
THE Pearl Modern Spa and Boutique is a 5-star wellness spa offering many services and products to help rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit. When you arrive to the Pearl for your appointment, the spa hostess escorts you to the women’s locker room. From the locker room you will enter into the women’s lounge where a masseuse greets you. The masseuse guides you to your personal, tranquil spa room. You probably will chat for about 5 minutes with the masseuse to discuss your lifestyle or personal concerns and what areas on your body to target during this visit. I recommend a 90-minute full-body massage to improve your health and target your problem areas. You may also choose the oil(s) that you want to be used during my massage. Joy and peace are my favorite oils.
Much Needed Wellness Treatment
After a 90-minute massage, the masseuse will guide you back to the ladies lounge. It is recommended that while in the lounge, you drink as much water as you can to hydrate. Large jugs of water will be sitting on the table for you to hydrate your body–one jug usually contains sliced cucumbers and the other jug has lemon or orange slices. Your masseuse will leave you in the lounge and return with your favorite treat(s): a delicious hot brownie with whipped cream and a glass of champagne.
After enjoying the treats, you will then return to the ladies locker room where you disrobed and take a warm shower. When you leave the locker room make sure you stop by the boutique to pick up some oils and salts to carry home. I have visited the Pearl Modern Spa and Boutique on several occasions and their spa and wellness services have been very rewarding.

Cleanse Your Body of Impurities
What does it mean to cleanse or detox the body? When you detox the body you are removing and scrubbing away toxins from your organs to promote health. I believe we all should use some sort of cleansing regimen to rid our bodies of impurities or toxins. There are many different types of cleanses, howevr, I prefer Iaso Tea® because it consist of all-natural organic ingredients. Our bodies require detoxification to help it function better. Detoxification or cleansing is good for your physical and emotional well-being. While cleansing rids the body of toxins or impurities, it clears the mind and sharpens your concentration. If you would like to use Iaso Tea® when you do your next cleanse, message me or join my One Healthy Body Group on FaceBook.
Recommended Times to Cleanse
Traditional Chinese medicine will recommend that you cleanse your body with the change of season, that is, winter, spring, summer, and fall. Every season correlates to different “elements” or organ systems in the body. For example, winter correlates with the water element and the kidneys or bladder system. From a Western naturopathic perspective, cold weather can put stress on your adrenal and thyroid glands, which tends to make the blood more acidic and causes a buildup of lactic acid. The buildup can lead to sluggishness, muscle and joint pain, and arthritis.1 My acupuncturist, at the Healen Arts Acupuncture Wellness Studio suggests that you cleanse or detox the body at least with the change of season. He said that you should try to cleanse at least four times a year.
How to Start and End the Cleanse
Gradually start the cleanse by removing meat, fish, or heavy foods from your diet. Then you can remove lentils, vegetables, and fruit. You should not consume any processed food while you are detoxing the body. Within three to five days, your body should be prepared to only receive a liquid diet of juice or broth. And when you resume to your normal diet you should gradually add food, starting with fruits, vegetables, lentils, fish, and then meat.
A cleanse can last for as many days as you like, providing you are well.

Aloe Vera Juice
This was my first time drinking aloe vera juice. Of course I did not sip it on my first taste. I had to take a big gulp and swished it all around in my mouth. Was I ever surprised, Its taste is very distinct—-strong and bitter—-reminds me of vinegar. If you decide to drink aloe juice, you should follow the suggested use label’s instructions and mix it with another juice or smoothie. I probably will continue to drink aloe juice to detoxify and cleanse my digestive system. And, I will be mixing it with fresh-squeezed juice.

I purchased an aloe vera plant during the early part of summer. I decided to place it in front of a window for direct sunlight and it grew so fast. The roots were showing at the top of the soil; therefore, I decided to repot it at the onset of fall. I was somewhat nervous about repotting it, but it is thriving. I like the idea of growing my own aloe vera because buying the individual leaves can be super pricey. A fairly large aloe vera leaf about 8 to 10 inches long will cost $5 or more. After buying a couple of leaves at $5 each, I knew it was time to grow my own. I also thought about growing and selling aloe, as it has many health benefits and would certainly help a lot of people.
You can always purchase aloe vera gel if you do not have an aloe plant.
I started using aloe vera on my skin because it was extremely dry. Before using aloe, I had tried using different moisturizing lotions that did not heal or correct my severe dry skin. However, within a few short weeks of using aloe vera, I could see its healing effects. My skin was completely healed.
What Is Aloe Vera?
Aloe vera, aka medicinal aloe, Lily of the Desert, Burn Plant, and Elephant’s Gall. It belongs to the family of succulent plants in the genus ‘Aloe’. The origin of aloe vera is believed to be in Sudan and has been used for more than 6,000 years. It grows best in warm, dry climates and is densely found in India, Africa, and other arid zones. This species has a wide usage in herbal medicines.
Health Benefits of Aloe
Aloe has numerous health benefits, as I already shared that it corrected my severely dry skin problem. It is also used to improve the digestive system, easing constipation. It strengthens the immune system, delays the aging process, cures dermatitis, alleviates menstrual problems, reduces arthritis pain, heals wounds, cures nausea, eliminates ulcers, lowers blood sugar levels, prevents diabetes, inhibits cancerous growth, heals the side effects of radiotherapy treatments, promotes hair growth, and soothes acid reflux symptoms.
Aloe is also used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides, improves cardiovascular functions, alleviates joint and muscle pain, enhances life span, and cures gum diseases. Aloe is known to alleviate pain since it has excellent anti-inflammatory properties. The health benefits of aloe are remarkable. I suggest that you discuss the use of aloe with your medical doctor before self-treating a medical condition.
It’s So Hot, Hot, Hot!
Water is simply the best thirst quencher. I have shared several posts about the importance of drinking water. I also wrote an article a few months ago titled “I Am Still Thirsty,” in which you were provided many of the benefits of drinking water. One evening last week, I was in the kitchen trying to decide what I wanted to drink with my dinner. I normally settled for a glass or bottle of cold water, or sometimes I would drink coffee, or green tea. On that particular evening, I put some water in my tea kettle, and, in a matter of minutes my tea kettle had started to whistle. I poured the hot water into my tea cup—that is what I settled on. Yes, hot water. Drinking hot water has some great benefits. Here are five great benefits of drinking hot water:
Drinking a glass of hot water is particularly beneficial for digestion, especially after a meal. Most of us are in the habit of drinking cold water during or after a meal, which can harden the oil present in the consumed foods and create a fat deposit on the inner wall of your intestine. This has the potential to cause intestinal cancer.
2. Bowel Movements
Hot water can help stimulate your intestine and make you have a bowel movement. Normally, weight loss would be number one on my list, but I have learned that waste elimination is essential to your overall health.
3. Weight Loss
Hot water helps with weight loss because it revs up the metabolism. And, the best time to rev up your metabolism is first thing in the morning. Start burning that fat early.
4. Helps Heal Sore Throat and Nasal Congestion
Drinking hot water has always been a great natural remedy for colds, coughs and a sore throat. It aids in loosening phlegm to clear nasal congestion. You can add 1 teaspoon of salt to a cup of hot water and stir until dissolved. Then gargle with it to help heal a sore throat.
Drinking hot water helps your body to release toxins, because it makes your body temperature rise and you begin to perspire. You can add fresh squeezed lemon to the hot water to boost the detoxing effects.
