Let’s Cleanse and Detox

Iaso Tea

Cleanse Your Body of Impurities

What does it mean to cleanse or detox the body?  When you detox the body you are removing and scrubbing away toxins from your organs to promote health.  I believe we all should use some sort of cleansing regimen to rid our bodies of impurities or toxins.  There are many different types of cleanses, howevr, I prefer Iaso Tea® because it consist of all-natural organic ingredients.  Our bodies require detoxification to help it function better.  Detoxification or cleansing is good for your physical and emotional well-being. While cleansing rids the body of toxins or impurities, it clears the mind and sharpens your concentration.  If you would like to use Iaso Tea® when you do your next cleanse, message me or join my One Healthy Body Group on FaceBook.

Recommended Times to Cleanse

Traditional Chinese medicine will recommend that you cleanse your body with the change of season, that is, winter, spring, summer, and fall.  Every season correlates to different “elements” or organ systems in the body.  For example, winter correlates with the water element and the kidneys or bladder system. From a Western naturopathic perspective, cold weather can put stress on your adrenal and thyroid glands, which tends to make the blood more acidic and causes a buildup of lactic acid.  The buildup can lead to sluggishness, muscle and joint pain, and arthritis.1  My acupuncturist, at the Healen Arts Acupuncture Wellness Studio suggests that you cleanse or detox the body at least with the change of season. He said that you should try to cleanse at least four times a year.

How to Start and End the Cleanse

Gradually start the cleanse by removing meat, fish, or heavy foods from your diet.  Then you can remove lentils, vegetables, and fruit.  You should not consume any processed food while you are detoxing the body. Within three to five days, your body should be prepared to only receive a liquid diet of juice or broth.  And when you resume to your normal diet you should gradually add food, starting with fruits, vegetables, lentils, fish, and then meat.

A cleanse can last for as many days as you like, providing you are well.

Drinking Aloe

Aloe Vera Juice

This was my first time drinking aloe vera juice. Of course I did not sip it on my first taste.  I had to take a big gulp and swished it all around in my mouth.  Was I ever surprised, Its taste is very distinct—-strong and bitter—-reminds me of vinegar. If you decide to drink aloe juice, you should follow the suggested use label’s instructions and mix it with another juice or smoothie.  I probably will continue to drink aloe juice to detoxify and cleanse my digestive system.  And, I will be mixing it with fresh-squeezed juice.

Growing Medicinal Aloe Vera

I purchased an aloe vera plant during the early part of summer. I decided to place it in front of a window for direct sunlight and it grew so fast. The roots were showing at the top of the soil; therefore, I decided to repot it at the onset of fall. I was somewhat nervous about repotting it, but it is thriving.  I like the idea of growing my own aloe vera because buying the individual leaves can be super pricey. A fairly large aloe vera leaf about 8 to 10 inches long will cost $5 or more.  After buying a couple of leaves at $5 each, I knew it was time to grow my own.  I also thought about growing and selling aloe, as it has many health benefits and would certainly help a lot of people.

Aloe vera’s commercial success for cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food use worldwide, is estimated to be somewhere around $13 billion annually.

You can always purchase aloe vera gel if you do not have an aloe plant.

I started using aloe vera on my skin because it was extremely dry. Before using aloe, I had tried using different moisturizing lotions that did not heal or correct my severe dry skin. However, within a few short weeks of using aloe vera, I could see its healing effects. My skin was completely healed.

What Is Aloe Vera?

Aloe vera, aka medicinal aloe, Lily of the Desert, Burn Plant, and Elephant’s Gall. It belongs to the family of succulent plants in the genus ‘Aloe’. The origin of aloe vera is believed to be in Sudan and has been used for more than 6,000 years. It grows best in warm, dry climates and is densely found in India, Africa, and other arid zones. This species has a wide usage in herbal medicines.

Health Benefits of Aloe

Aloe has numerous health benefits, as I already shared that it corrected my severely dry skin problem. It is also used to improve the digestive system, easing constipation. It strengthens the immune system, delays the aging process, cures dermatitis, alleviates menstrual problems, reduces arthritis pain, heals wounds, cures nausea, eliminates ulcers, lowers blood sugar levels, prevents diabetes, inhibits cancerous growth, heals the side effects of radiotherapy treatments, promotes hair growth, and soothes acid reflux symptoms.

Aloe is also used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides, improves cardiovascular functions, alleviates joint and muscle pain, enhances life span, and cures gum diseases. Aloe is known to alleviate pain since it has excellent anti-inflammatory properties. The health benefits of aloe are remarkable. I suggest that you discuss the use of aloe with your medical doctor before self-treating a medical condition.

5 Benefits of Drinking Hot Water

It’s So Hot, Hot, Hot!300a3bd706b2d8ebd2617d19fa014259

Water is simply the best thirst quencher.  I have shared several posts about the importance of drinking water.  I also wrote an article a few months ago titled “I Am Still Thirsty,” in which you were provided many of the benefits of drinking water.  One evening last week, I was in the kitchen trying to decide what I wanted to drink with my dinner.  I normally settled for a glass or bottle of cold water, or sometimes I would drink coffee, or green tea.  On that particular evening, I put some water in my tea kettle, and, in a matter of minutes my tea kettle had started to whistle.  I poured the hot water into my tea cup—that is what I settled on.  Yes, hot water.  Drinking hot water has some great benefits.  Here are five great benefits of drinking hot water:

1. Digestion

Drinking a glass of hot water is particularly beneficial for digestion, especially after a meal.  Most of us are in the habit of drinking cold water during or after a meal, which can harden the oil present in the consumed foods and create a fat deposit on the inner wall of your intestine.  This has the potential to cause intestinal cancer.

2. Bowel Movements

Hot water can help stimulate your intestine and make you have a bowel movement.  Normally, weight loss would be number one on my list, but I have learned that waste elimination is essential to your overall health.

3. Weight Loss

Hot water helps with weight loss because it revs up the metabolism.  And, the best time to rev up your metabolism is first thing in the morning.  Start burning that fat early.

4.  Helps Heal Sore Throat and Nasal Congestion

Drinking hot water has always been a great natural remedy for colds, coughs and a sore throat.  It aids in loosening phlegm to clear nasal congestion.  You can add 1 teaspoon of salt to a cup of hot water and stir until dissolved.  Then gargle with it to help heal a sore throat.

Drinking hot water helps your body to release toxins, because it makes your body temperature rise and you begin to perspire.  You can add fresh squeezed lemon to the hot water to boost the detoxing effects.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2017

Got2bGina-Sporting-Pink-300x225October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Imagine this scenario—then ask yourself a simple question…  You are enjoying a girl’s night out with eight ladies who are your family members or perhaps friends from high school or college, and one of them ask for the groups attention.  She tearfully tells the group that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and needs their friendship and support more than ever.  Everyone’s high-spirited emotions suddenly changed.  According to BreastCancer.org “About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.”

Are you committed to supporting the cure of breast cancer?

The fight is still on, and we must continue to hope and believe that we can win.  Read “U.S. Breast Cancer Statistics” posted on BreastCancer.org and share it with your mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, colleagues, friends, and neighbors.  Be strong—wear pink—educate others, and most important, make a commitment to support the cure for breast cancer.

Why I Love Fall? Let Me Count the Ways

Fall is my favorite season. It seems to have more oomph than winter, spring, or summer. Fall is like a river with its waters dancing down the stream. You can hear it—sounds of tranquility and joy. Fall is so beautiful that I want to enjoy each day. I am going to keep count of how many more days I have to enjoy fall, using this days to fall link. I have to admit that I also love the health benefits of fall. For example, as the temperatures cool down in mid- to late fall, the temptation to go to sleep earlier, and for longer periods, effects many of us. You may feel more relaxed from looking at the changing colors of the fall leaves.

Perfect fall day for enjoying the beauty that it brings.

  1. The colors of the leaves start to change from green to yellow, red, orange, and brown.
  2. You hear the wind from the leaves falling and blowing around on the ground. It’s a soft crackling sound.
  3. The hot and humid air you breathed for the past three months is gone. The temperature starts to drop in the evening, so you look forward to your after-dinner walks.
  4. Sipping a cup of hot tea or chai is more enjoyable when the weather is cooler.
  5. Friends are sporting their favorite NFL tee shirts.
  6. Watching your favorite football team play. Go Redskins!
  7. Oh, and time for the football parties.
  8. You start to relax and reflect more.  A great time to start journaling.
  9. Road trips and three-day weekends, especially good for seeing the beauty of fall.
  10. Dress in layers—chic and stylish fashion ideas.
  11. Fall dishes are delicious. I love the caramel apples, pumpkin spice lattes, ginger bread, and pots of steamy homemade soups.

Do you love fall? Share your favorite reason(s) for loving fall.

Stunning foliage comes with the fall.

Networking on the Water…

I never knew that working could be so much fun…  What a great Waterfront Networking event hosted by the Public Relations Society of America, Central Chesapeake Chapter at the Maritime Museum in Annapolis, MD—perfect place no doubt.  Who does not want to be learning and networking on the water?

200609_172593319459348_1649927_nThe true highlight of this event was being under the professional tutelage of the famous YouTube video creator, Jon BarnesJon Barnes is the Director of Communications of ADG Creative in Columbia, MD.   He has created 250 videos with nearly 7 million views from a global audience to attain a robust personal YouTube brand.  Jon has created a booming community around his core subject matter (cars, art, how-to’s, weird stuff: See https://www.youtube.com/pumthuggee).  Jon shared his “studio-in-a-bag” kit with the network event attendees, showing exactly how he creates content on the go, demonstrating interactive elements that influential YouTube users employ to garner views and engagement, including titling, tagging, naming, using cards and annotations, vlogging, monetization of best practices, partner collaboration, and analytics.  Jon is awesome with his studio-in-a-bag.

I also truly grasped the H2H (human-to-human) marketing concept.  The world-wide web and Facebook are no longer that untouchable air space.  I met, in person, Jenna Soneira, a Facebook friend, a blogger, and the president of INTEGR8 Marketing.  I cannot wait until the next social media networking event.

Nordstrom Annapolis Presents Beauty & Fashion Extravaganza

20170513_113839[11993]Alarm set for 6:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning to attend the Nordstrom Annapolis Beauty & Fashion Extravaganza:  doors opened at 7:30 a.m. and the show started at 8:00 a.m.  Women and men lined up at Nordstrom’s in Annapolis, MD, around 7:15 a.m. this morning.  I wanted to arrive early enough to get good seats.  And, guess what?  I landed two front-row seats—we could reach out and touch.20170513_074733

The ‘School House Rock Band’ provided live entertainment until the fashion show started.  Their songs and sounds were jazzy and fantastic.  The models walked the runway with some trendy spring fashion styles by fashion designers such as Kate Spade, Ted Baker, and Vince Camuto.

The fresh look of makeup presented spring’s hottest reds, to bright cherry, to deep bordeaux, from an opague shade to a sheer one.  The featured vendors were some of my favorites:  Chanel, MAC, Bobbi Brown, Erno Laszio, and the list goes on.  The makeup look this spring is golden days and sultry nights.  Sun-kissed skin and shimmering highlights give that everyday summer look, a healthy, relaxed glow.  Deep copper shadow and rich lip color dial up the drama for evening.  Vendors who sponsored this event presented the raffle-winning attendees with some fabulous gifts.

 Fabulous 50s

This is the third Nordstrom Beauty Trend event I have attended.  I cannot think of anything else that I would rather be doing this soggy, Saturday morning.  Beauty is my niche—I love beauty, health, wellness, and fashion.  I am still super excited and cannot wait until the next event.  Nordstrom’s Beauty Trend events are always fun, entertaining, and true overviews of current beauty and fashion trends.

How to Make Your Fresh Produce Last Longer

Do you find yourself throwing out produce every week?  You go to the market and you load up on your favorite fruits and veggies only to toss them out before you get a chance to use them because they are molding or limp.  Some of your produce-spoiling problems can be solved depending on how you store them.

You cannot store all fruits and veggies together because some produce a gas called ethylene as they ripen. This gas can cause ethylene-sensitive produce to prematurely ripen. Therefore, keep ethylene-producing foods away from ethylene-sensitive foods—store these foods in different places.  Here are the fruits and vegetables that produce ethylene:  apricots, avocados, bananas, cantaloupes, honeydew melons, kiwis, mangoes, nectarines, papayas, peaches, pears, plums, and tomatoes.  These fruits and veggies are sensitive to the effects of ethylene and should be stored in a high humidity crisper drawer:  apples, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, eggplants, green beans, leafy greens, lettuce, peas, peppers, potatoes, spinach, summer squash, watermelon, and zucchini.images8PIZ9S4Y

  1. Store potatoes, tomatoes, and onions in a cool, dry place, but not in the fridge. The cold will ruin their flavor.
  2. Keep unripe fruits and veggies like pears, peaches, plums, kiwis, mangoes, apricots, avocados, melons, and bananas on the counter. Once they’re ripe, place them in the fridge. Banana peels will turn dark brown, but it won’t affect the flesh.
  3. Store salad greens and fresh herbs in bags filled with a little air and sealed tightly. The puffy bags might take up a little bit more room in your fridge, but the loss of space is worth it; your greens will stay bright, crisp, and flavorful.88e80131b6cc17f7_salad.preview_tall
  4. Citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines, lemons, and limes, will do fine for up to a week in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight, but you can lengthen their lives by storing them in the fridge in a mesh or perforated plastic bag.
  5. Wrap the celery in a plastic bag and then wrap that bag in aluminum foil to get a much longer refrigerated shelf life. Store in the crisper bin.
  6. Carrots, lettuce, and broccoli start to spoil as soon as they’re picked, so place them in separate plastic baggies in the crisper in your fridge and make sure they’re dry since moisture speeds up spoiling.
  7. Cut the leafy tops of your pineapple off (or give the leafy top a firm twist to remove).and store your pineapple upside down. You are redistributing the sugars that sink to the bottom during shipping and helping the pineapple to keep longer.
  8. Avoid washing berries until right before you’re ready to eat them. Wetness encourages mold growth.
  9. Wash, dry, and cut your fruits and veggies all at once, store them in covered glass containers lined in paper towels. You’ll not only be able to see them—which reminds you to eat them—but you’ll also be keeping moisture out.
  10. You can try purchasing only what you know you will be using—for the meal planner this could possibly work.img_FruitVegST1490659555
